A substantial 18th-century Dutch stone font of unusual and highly distinctive form, carved from deep black Petit Granit limestone. The generously proportioned circular basin features two integral handles carved into either side of the body, with a gently tapered profile narrowing towards the base. The upper edge is finished with a broad, concave moulded rim, while the exterior retains a finely chiselled surface finish, giving the stone an appealing tactile quality.
The font displays pleasing wear and a rich patination consistent with considerable age and use. There are some small, unobtrusive losses to the body and edges, adding to its character, but no cracks or significant breaks. Structurally sound and perfectly watertight, this impressive and highly unusual piece retains an authentic surface and a strong sculptural presence.
